The NYC Department of Education is currently undergoing a technology refresh for infrastructure servers and firewalls in over 500 schools citywide. These assets have provided conduits for connectivity for over seven years and are now at the end of their useful life from an information technology perspective. However, these IT assets can be utilized as teaching tools for Career and Technical Education (CTE) schools with information technology programs to aid in the instruction of programs such as A+, Cisco Network Academy, MOUSE Squad, and C-Tech.

In the spirit of partnership with the NYCDOE, IBM Corporation and Custom Computers Inc. will facilitate the reuse and distribution of technology by providing asset inventory, pickup, delivery, temporary storage, and program management. This will provide schools with technology programs the opportunity to obtain IBM servers and Cisco firewalls and use them as teaching aids, while not costing the school or the program anything other than ensuring the technology will be utilized for instructional purposes. In addition, Cisco switches will be made available to be used within classrooms only to allow the school to upgrade the low speed aging hubs that are currently in use.

Schools wishing to participate in the program will be required to submit an "Equipment Order Form". Each request will be limited to a quantity of ten servers and ten firewalls. The primary request from each school will be fulfilled on a first come first serve basis. All additional requests will be considered after all primary requests have been fulfilled.

This program will begin accepting requests on August 9th and will run through October 31st, 2005. All approved requests will be fulfilled by November 11th, 2005 providing equipment supplies are available.

Equipment delivery dates will be coordinated with school contact after the first month of the program and will be dependent on the schedule for geographic areas. Equipment deliveries are not expected to begin until August 22nd, 2005. Equipment Use Guidelines and Disclaimers
The server and firewall technology under this program is to be used for instructional purposes only and is not to be connected to the school network or be utilized for connectivity purposes under any circumstances. Connecting these servers or firewalls to the production school network will cause disruption of Internet and centralized application connectivity for school users.

The switch technology may only be utilized for providing connectivity to the school network for classrooms where hubs currently do not exist, hubs are no longer functioning, or the classroom requires an upgrade. These switches are NOT to be used in labs, libraries, or classrooms with 15 or more computers as they will not provide adequate bandwidth for connectivity to the school backbone network.

All equipment under this program will not be covered under a NYCDOE maintenance or warranty contract. Any software or license installed on equipment under this program is to be used for learning purposes only and is not to be used for production purposes of any kind.

Technology Asset Disposal
In the spirit of partnership with the NYCDOE, IBM Corporation, Custom Computers Inc. and Cisco Systems Inc. will facilitate the disposal of technology by providing asset inventory, pickup, temporary storage, disposal services, transportation and overall program management.

All remaining servers and firewalls that are not distributed by October 31st, 2005 will be disposed using IBM’s World-recognized certified disposal processes for IT assets. In addition, all APC UPS’ will be collected from schools that are visited and disposed by IBM in an environmentally friendly manner.

IBM Asset Recovery Solutions disposes of assets without market value in accordance with all applicable U.S. federal, state and local laws. IBM will provide a Certificate of Destruction for all serialized assets.
